What is this service?
OpenRouter (openrouter.ai) is a unified API gateway for large language models. Instead of signing up separately with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, and dozens of other providers, you send one request to OpenRouter and it routes you to whichever model you choose — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, Qwen, and hundreds more — behind a single API key and a single balance.
Developers, indie builders, and AI startups use OpenRouter to compare models, add automatic fallbacks when a provider is down, and avoid managing many separate billing accounts. It is usage-based: you buy credits up front and they are spent per token as you make requests. There are no fixed monthly plans, no seats, and credits do not expire. OpenRouter also offers a set of free models with lower rate limits, and a BYOK (bring-your-own-key) option if you already have provider keys.
If your local bank card is declined at OpenRouter's checkout, Mehbit lets you fund a reloadable virtual Visa or Mastercard with USDT and top up your credits at openrouter.ai/settings/credits.
Why is payment hard?
Many local bank cards are not authorized for international SaaS billing. Services process payments through Stripe on international rails, so domestic-only cards are often declined even when you have sufficient balance.
Accepted card types
- Virtual Visa
- Virtual Mastercard
- Prepaid
- Debit
- Credit card
- Crypto (direct)
Reloadable virtual Visa and Mastercard work at OpenRouter's Stripe checkout when name/address/ZIP match and 3-D Secure completes. Single-use gift-card BINs often fail. OpenRouter also natively accepts USDC crypto via Coinbase, so crypto top-ups are possible directly.

FAQ
Does OpenRouter accept virtual Visa or Mastercard?
Yes. OpenRouter processes card top-ups through Stripe and accepts all major Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards. A reloadable virtual Visa or Mastercard works as long as the billing name, address, and ZIP match the card and any 3-D Secure step completes.
Can I pay for OpenRouter with a Mehbit card?
Yes. Issue a Mehbit virtual Visa or Mastercard, fund it with USDT, then add it at openrouter.ai/settings/credits and buy credits. The Mehbit card presents to Stripe as a standard international card.
How does OpenRouter billing work — is there a monthly plan?
No monthly plan. OpenRouter is pure pay-as-you-go: you buy credits (minimum $5) and each request deducts the model's exact per-token cost. Credits never expire and there is no subscription or seat fee. There is a purchase fee on top-ups (about 5.5% with a $0.80 minimum on cards, 5% on crypto), but no markup on model usage.
Can I pay with crypto?
Yes. OpenRouter natively accepts USDC crypto through Coinbase with a flat 5% purchase fee. But for most Iranian users, funding a Mehbit virtual card with USDT and paying by card is simpler than sending USDC on-chain.
Is there a free trial or free tier?
There is no paid trial, but OpenRouter offers a genuine free tier: a set of free models (such as DeepSeek and Llama variants) callable with lower daily rate limits and no card. Spending $10 once permanently raises the free-model daily limit.
What if my local bank card is declined at OpenRouter?
Iranian and many other local bank cards are declined by Stripe. Fund a Mehbit virtual Visa or Mastercard with USDT and use it to buy credits. Mehbit users have made dozens of successful real card top-ups to OpenRouter.
Tips
Top up in a larger single amount to soften the fee: card top-ups have a $0.80 minimum fee, so a $5 top-up loses about 16% to fees while a $50 or $100 top-up only loses about 5.5%.
Set your billing name, address, and ZIP/postal code to exactly match your Mehbit card details so Stripe's AVS check passes on the first try.
Keep enough USDT balance on the Mehbit card to cover both the credit amount and OpenRouter's ~5.5% purchase fee before you check out.
Test with the free models (DeepSeek, Llama variants) first — you can validate your setup with no card, then add credits only once you know which models you need.
Turn on auto top-up in OpenRouter settings if you run production traffic, but leave enough headroom on the Mehbit card so the automatic charge does not fail mid-workload.
