What is this service?

WeChat is China’s dominant messaging app, and far more besides — a social feed, a payments wallet, and a platform for mini-programs that act as small apps inside it. Tencent, its publisher, bills a range of paid items through it.

The paid side is what brings people to this page: WeChat Pay top-ups, in-app purchases inside mini-programs and games, and subscriptions billed by Tencent. All of these are charged to a card.

On a Mehbit card those charges are declined, and for a different reason than most blocked services. This one is a country restriction, not a merchant category restriction.

Most services that fail on these cards fail because of the merchant category — the code that says what a merchant sells. WeChat is not one of those. The decline we recorded gives a country restriction as the reason: the charge is billed from a country that is restricted on these cards, so the network stops it regardless of what is being bought.

That distinction matters, because it means the block is not tied to any particular WeChat product. A game top-up, a sticker pack, and a mini-program subscription all bill from the same place, so all of them hit the same wall.

We tested this with real money. A WeChat charge through Tencent was attempted on a funded Mehbit card and was declined at the network with a country restriction. The card had funds available; the origin of the charge was the problem.

There is also a practical limit worth naming before you plan around WeChat Pay. Adding a foreign card to WeChat Pay generally requires verifying a WeChat account with identity documents, and Tencent applies its own rules to that. A working card would not by itself get you through account verification.

Why is payment hard?

Many local bank cards are not authorized for international SaaS billing. Services process payments through Stripe on international rails, so domestic-only cards are often declined even when you have sufficient balance.

Can I pay for WeChat with a Mehbit card?

Tips
