What is GlassWire?

GlassWire is a network monitor and firewall for Windows. It draws a live graph of everything your PC sends and receives, shows which app is talking to which server, alerts you when a program goes online for the first time or a new device joins your network, and lets you cut any app off from the internet with a click. It runs on Windows 10 or later, on both x64 and ARM64 machines. GlassWire is a brand of Domotz Inc., a US network-monitoring company.

There is a real free version, and for plenty of people it is enough: traffic monitoring, the network graph, first-activity alerts and the network scanner all work, but network history, bandwidth usage and alert logs only reach back one day. GlassWire Premium removes those limits and adds the parts most people actually pay for — the full firewall with Ask to Connect, Lockdown mode and firewall profiles — plus evil-twin Wi-Fi detection, ARP-spoofing detection and system-file monitoring. The Android app is a different story: GlassWire says every feature on Android is now free, so there is nothing to buy on the phone.

Premium is sold as an annual subscription through GlassWire’s own web Management Console. We found no local payment method and no cryptocurrency option, so an international card is the practical route. GlassWire Premium is priced per license — one license per PC — and billed once a year. The Personal plan (1 license) is listed at $2.99 a month, paid annually, which comes to $35.88 for the year. Bigger plans cover 2 (Duo), 5 (Family), 10 (Small Business) or 20 (Business) licenses, and the pricing page advertises discount codes on them: for example $4.18 a month for Duo with the code DUO30, or $7.48 a month for Family with FAMILY50, both billed annually. Two things move the amount you really pay away from these figures. GlassWire’s terms say prices exclude VAT, which is added at the applicable rate, and that you pay in the currency shown on the order form — not necessarily US dollars. Read the total on the order form before you confirm.

We tested GlassWire with a real Mehbit card and the payment went through.

GlassWire may bill in euros rather than dollars. When a merchant bills in euros, the amount taken from a dollar card depends on the exchange rate on the day, so it can differ a little from any figure you worked out in advance. The practical rule is simple: fund the card with some headroom above the total on the order form rather than the exact figure.

The moment to plan for is the renewal. Premium renews automatically a year after you buy it and charges the card saved in your account, without asking first. If the card is empty that day, the renewal fails and, as GlassWire describes it, the PCs on the plan revert to the free version with its limited features. Put the renewal date in your calendar and top up the card a few days before. If you do not want to renew, switch auto-renewal off from the Plan page in the Management Console; the plan then runs to its end date and drops back to free.

Buying works differently from most software stores. You do not pay on the pricing page: you install GlassWire, create a GlassWire account from the account icon in the app (at sign-up you choose whether the account is registered in the USA or Europe), and then upgrade your plan in the Management Console. Once the plan has free licenses, choosing Upgrade from the GlassWire menu on a PC activates Premium there. GlassWire’s terms include a 14-day money-back guarantee; after that, refunds are at GlassWire’s discretion. If you still have an old Basic, Pro or Elite license, that is a legacy subscription, and GlassWire says to cancel it through the link in your original order email rather than in the console.

Why local cards get declined at GlassWire

Many local bank cards are not enabled for international online payments, or their bank refuses foreign merchants. Merchants abroad charge cards through global payment processors, so a domestic-only card is often declined even when it has enough balance.
