What is this service?

Mullvad VPN is a privacy-focused VPN run by Mullvad VPN AB in Gothenburg, Sweden. It encrypts your connection and routes it through Mullvad’s servers, so the websites and networks you use see a Mullvad IP address instead of yours. There are apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and Mullvad also publishes configuration files for the official WireGuard clients.

What sets Mullvad apart is how little it asks of you. Signing up takes no email address, no username and no password: the website generates a 16-digit account number, and that number is the account. You add time to it by paying, and the time counts down. One account works on up to five devices, and every feature is included — there are no tiers, bundles or upsells.

Mullvad accepts a long list of payment methods, and several of them need no card at all: cash sent by post, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Monero, bank transfer, PayPal and a handful of European bank-payment schemes. If you already hold crypto and are happy to pay with it, paying Mullvad directly is a perfectly good route — and it is cheaper. Pricing is the simplest in the category. Mullvad charges €5 per month, and that rate is the same whether you pay for one month or for a year — no long-term discount, no introductory price and no renewal hike later. The one exception runs the other way: Mullvad takes 10% off payments made in cryptocurrency, because they cost it less to process. Prices are set in euros; Mullvad shows approximate conversions into other currencies on its pricing page, but a card payment is charged in EUR.

Card payments at Mullvad are one-off, not subscriptions. Mullvad stopped accepting new recurring card and PayPal subscriptions in June 2022 so that it would have to keep less data about its customers, and today a card payment just adds a fixed amount of time to your account. Nothing is charged again automatically; when the time runs out, the account simply stops working until you add more. For a Mehbit card that is the easy case: there is no renewal date to keep the card funded for and no failed rebill waiting to happen. Fund the card, pay, and you are done.

On 2026-09-15 a Mehbit card was used for three Mullvad payments. A €10.00 charge settled as $11.86 and a €5.00 charge settled as $5.93, so real money moved on both. A third charge, €15.00 ($17.76), was authorized for the full amount — a real payment, not a zero-amount card check — and was still waiting to settle when this page was written. The amounts line up with one, two and three months at €5. All three appeared under a statement line made of VPN* followed by a ten-character code and GOTHENBURG, SWE. That line does not spell out the Mullvad name, but it matches the format Mullvad documents for its own card charges, and Mullvad is the Gothenburg VPN that bills that way.

Because the price is in euros and the card holds US dollars, the dollar amount taken off the card depends on the exchange rate at the moment you pay — in those charges €5 came to just under $6. Leave a margin above the plain conversion when you fund the card instead of loading an exact figure.

Two practical warnings. First, your account number is the only thing that proves the account is yours, so write it down somewhere safe the moment it is generated. Mullvad can help recover an account from a card payment, but it asks for the card details plus the date, time and amount of the payment, and card payments can only be traced for 20 days. Second, pay on mullvad.net in a browser. The mobile apps can also sell time through Google Play and the Apple App Store, which bill through those stores rather than through Mullvad — Google Play is blocked for our cards, and Mullvad does not refund App Store purchases itself.

Will Mullvad charge my card again automatically?

No. Mullvad stopped taking new recurring card subscriptions in 2022, and every card payment now simply adds time to your account. When the time runs out the VPN stops working until you pay again, so there is no renewal date to keep the card funded for.

Mullvad accepts crypto — why use a card at all?

Do I need an email address to sign up?
