What is this service?
Proton is the Swiss company behind Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Pass, Proton Drive, Proton Calendar and a growing set of privacy-focused apps. It is based in Geneva and built its name on end-to-end encrypted email; today one Proton account unlocks the whole family, from an encrypted inbox and cloud storage to a password manager and a VPN.
Every product has a free tier, and you pay only when you want more: more storage, more addresses, custom domains, the full VPN server network or unlimited hide-my-email aliases. You can buy a single product — Mail Plus, VPN Plus or Pass Plus — or a bundle. Proton Unlimited puts the paid version of everything under one subscription, and Duo, Family and Visionary extend it to two or six people.
Proton charges paid plans to a card, PayPal or wallet and renews them automatically. A Mehbit virtual Visa or Mastercard topped up with USDT works at Proton’s checkout like any other international card, which is the simplest way to keep a Proton subscription running without a local bank card.
Why is payment hard?
Many local bank cards are not authorized for international SaaS billing. Services process payments through Stripe on international rails, so domestic-only cards are often declined even when you have sufficient balance.
Accepted card types
- Virtual Visa

- Prepaid
- Debit
- Credit card
- Crypto (direct)
Proton accepts major credit and debit cards including Visa and Mastercard, and a reloadable Mehbit virtual card was accepted and charged successfully. Proton also takes Bitcoin directly, but only as manual top-ups of account credit — a card is the way to get automatic renewals.

FAQ
Can I pay for Proton with a virtual Visa or Mastercard?
Yes. Proton accepts all major credit and debit cards, and we tested it with a real Mehbit card — the payment went through and settled. Issue a Mehbit virtual card, top it up with USDT, and pay at Proton’s checkout.
Proton accepts Bitcoin — why use a card at all?
Because Bitcoin cannot renew your plan automatically. Bitcoin payments become account credit, and you must send a new payment manually at least 24 hours before each bill; confirmations can take up to a day. A card on file is charged automatically on the renewal date, so the subscription keeps running. Both work — the card is simply the hands-off option.
How much does Proton cost?
There is a free plan. Paid plans in Proton’s euro list start at €4.99 a month for Mail Plus (€3.99 a month on a yearly plan) and €12.99 a month for Proton Unlimited (€9.99 a month yearly). Duo, Family and Visionary cover two or six people. VPN Plus and Pass Plus are sold separately with promotional multi-year prices.
Can I get a refund from Proton?
Yes, within 30 days of the initial purchase you can cancel for a full refund. It is available once per user, processed within 30 days, and returned in the original currency to the original payment method — so to the Mehbit card you paid with. Cash and bank transfers are not refundable.
Which currency will Proton charge me in?
Worldwide, Proton bills in Swiss francs, euros or US dollars, with some regional currencies available for card and PayPal payments. Choosing US dollars avoids a conversion on a dollar-funded Mehbit card; with euros or francs, the amount taken depends on the rate on the day.
Tips
Choose US dollars as your billing currency if the checkout offers it, so a dollar-funded Mehbit card is charged with no conversion.
Top the card up before the renewal date, not after. Proton charges the card on file automatically, and an empty card is declined.
A 12-month plan costs less per month than monthly billing, but the whole year is charged at once — make sure the balance covers it.
Renewal happens at the then-current price for the same term length. Check the renewal amount in your account before the date comes round.
Want to stop? Downgrade before the current period ends — cancelling after renewal only helps if you are still inside the 30-day refund window.
Keep the Mehbit card active for at least 30 days after buying: a refund goes back to the original payment method.
Start on the free plan first if you are unsure. Proton’s free tier has no time limit, and VPN Free needs no card at all.
